Sensory Products for Everyday Calm & Comfort

What Are Sensory Products?

Sensory products are thoughtfully designed items that provide gentle, consistent sensory input to help support calm, focus, and comfort in everyday life. These products are commonly used by children, teens, and adults who benefit from soothing pressure, tactile textures, and or grounding weight as part of their daily routines.

These products utilize various materials and textures to create a soothing experience. For example, some weighted blankets incorporate natural cotton or bamboo, which not only provide weight but also promote breathability and comfort. Others may include plush or minky fabrics for a softer touch, catering to different sensory preferences and enhancing the calming effect.

At SensoryCritters, our sensory products are designed to resemble everyday items—such as quilts, blankets, hoodies, and vests—so they blend naturally into home, school, and community environments.

Furthermore, sensory input can be beneficial for individuals living with autism spectrum, anxiety, Alzheimer’s/dementia, Mental illness, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, or those experiencing sleep disorders, to name a few. Research suggests that consistent tactile feedback can help regulate emotions and reduce stress, making sensory products a valuable addition to therapeutic practices.

How Sensory Products Support Calm and Focus

Research suggests that consistent tactile feedback can help regulate emotions and reduce stress, making sensory products a valuable addition to therapeutic practices. Dr. Temple Grandin invented her own squeeze machine, which she could adjust the amount of pressure needed each time of use. Today, that product is developed by Therafin Corporation. Dr. Grandin understood the feeling of compression, which allowed her body to regulate and calm. Today, products are used for the same purpose, such as weighted blankets, weighted and compression vests, weighted hoodies, and even our ball blanket, which provides end-user compression.

Many people find deep, evenly distributed pressure helps their body feel more settled and organized. Sensory products can be used during quiet time, relaxation, learning activities, or bedtime to encourage a sense of comfort and stability.

Common benefits people seek from sensory products include:

  • A calming, grounding sensation
  • Support during moments of rest or focus
  • Comfort during transitions or downtime
  • A cozy, familiar feel without a clinical appearance

It is to be noted that while sensory products can offer significant benefits, they should be used as part of a plan overseen by a therapist or a comprehensive approach to well-being. This includes integrating other calming strategies such as mindfulness breathing exercises and establishing a peaceful environment.

Sensory products are not medical devices, but they are widely used as part of supportive routines at home and in everyday settings.

Sensory Quilts

The owners of SensoryCritters have been quilting for over 40 years. When the company was founded more than 21 years ago, the first products designed and created were weighted blankets and weighted vests, built on a foundation of craftsmanship, durability, and therapeutic purpose.

Lisa, founder and designer, later created the SensoryCritters Sensory Quilt for individuals living with neurological conditions where verbal communication may be limited, but expression through touch and vision remains strong. Her first sensory quilt was made using pieces of older, familiar fabrics, intentionally chosen to evoke comfort, recognition, and connection.

Designed as a medium-weight sensory quilt, it was created for individuals in long-term care settings. Over time, medical facilities and families began choosing these quilts for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, Autism, Dementia, Parkinson’s, TBI, and related neurological conditions.

Weighted blankets are commonly used in these populations because they provide deep pressure stimulation (DPS) — a steady, grounding input that can help reduce anxiety, involuntary movement, agitation, and sleep disruption. The SensoryCritters Sensory Quilt builds on this principle by combining gentle weight with a variety of textures and fabrics reminiscent of the past, offering both calming pressure and meaningful sensory engagement.

Individuals with neurological trauma often benefit from interventions that support regulation and reduce agitation. Deep pressure touch stimulation encourages parasympathetic nervous system activity through increased vagal tone, promoting calmness and reducing the body’s stress response.
In simple terms, this means helping the body shift out of “fight-or-flight” and into a more relaxed, regulated state.
